Today, Bill Gates will announce that they are making much of their developer software free to college and university students. The program, called Microsoft DreamSpark will offer development software that Microsoft currently have and will include software such as Visual Studio Professional Edition, XNA Game Studio, Expression Studio, SQL Server and Windows Server. Students who were able to get software at a discount will now be able to get it for free. Obviously, this is a great opportunity for Microsoft to build steady awareness among future professionals and while getting them familiar with the platforms of some of their new software. Value-Centered Management teaches that a company must first understand what the customer value. With the feedback retrieved from the students, Mircrosoft will continue to create a steady pipeline of communication to the customer while creating exactly what their future customers want. It also signals that they recognize they have real competition (including open source alternatives) when it comes to IDEs and other developer tools. So I guess open source does matter.
